I am Senior Associate Dean of Community Engagement and Equity in Research for Atrium Heath/Wake Forest School of Medicine, Associate Director of Community Outreach and Engagement for Atrium Health/Wake Forest Comprehensive Cancer Center and the Maya Angelou Center for Health Equity. Prior to Joining Atrium Health Wake Forest, I was Associate Professor at Duke in the Department of Family Medicine and Community Health and served as Founding Director of the nationally awarded Duke Cancer Institute’s Office of Health Equity and Community Outreach and Engagement and the Duke Center for Equity in Research, and Co-Director of the Duke Clinical and Translational Science Institute focused on Stakeholder Strategy and Research Equity. My research interests and collaborations focus on addressing systemic and structural racism and implicit bias in research and healthcare and advancing the science and practice of community and academic-health partnerships toward trustworthy healthcare and research organizations. As a medical sociologist, I develop innovative interventions and models to: (1) facilitate community and academic-health partnerships to shape all aspects of research and health services, (2) integrate community leaders, members, and patients as experts, colleagues, and advisors in Learning Health Systems’ strategic prioritizing and services, and (3) increase and broaden diverse representation in clinical research participation, and the research workforce. I am the inventor of Just ASKTM a highly interactive, nationally endorsed and adapted ASCO and ACCC training program designed for research teams to identify barriers to clinical research/trials participation and learn applicable multi-level strategies to mitigate them. I am the current President of the Association of Cancer Care Centers, and serve on numerous boards, committee’s and teams all working to advance health equity and reduce racial disparities in health outcomes, healthcare and research.
