Swapna Thota, MD, Associate Professor- Hematology/Oncology

As an Associate professor at UTHSC, I have a sustained focus in clinical as well as translational research in hematologic malignancies specifically, myeloid neoplasms and bone marrow failure conditions. Prior to current work in Memphis TN, I was part of myeloid teams at Taussig Cancer Institute, Cleveland as well as Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center, NY. This period inspired my work in clinical research of myeloid malignancies. During this time, I was awarded Buffalo translational research scholar award (KL2 equivalent) and this experience a strong foundation in career development. At the same time, I appreciated the need of dedicated mentors in career development as a clinician-scientist. I work at UTHSC as the Fellowship Program Director for adult hematology and medical oncology trainees (PGY4-6). As part of my work at UTHSC besides providing much needed academic hematology services to our community, a very underserved population, I have made it my mission to train adept clinicians in field of oncology with an aspiration to the contribute to the progress of our field and excellent clinical care that I hope in future to narrow the disparities that currently exist in our community. Within the first two years as the Program Director, a quarter of each graduating class has chosen to pursue academic hematology and medical oncology. Our trainees recently have raised the bar of academic success during clinical training, consistently present their work at national meetings and receive accolades at a national level. I will continue my effort as their Program director and mentor to a few of the trainees to play a key role in their career development. My current research - outcomes based in hematology is supported by I-REACH foundation from Georgetown University.
