Dr. Venugopal is Professor of Medicine and the Elodia Kehm Chair of Hematology in the Division of Hematology/Oncology at Rush University and Director of the Section of Hematology at Rush University Medical Center. He obtained his medical degree from University of Kerala, in India and then trained in Hematology/Oncology at the Tata Memorial Cancer Center in Mumbai. Dr. Venugopal did master’s in clinical Hematology at the University of London, Royal Postgraduate Medical School, Hammersmith Hospital. Subsequently, he completed residency and fellowship in Hematology/Oncology at Rush University. He has been actively involved in clinical and laboratory research in hematologic malignancies, specifically, clinical trials for the treatment of lymphomas & chronic lymphocytic leukemia, factors that predict response to therapy and prognosis, and the role of monoclonal antibodies and experimental drug treatments for hematologic malignancies. He has designed and conducted studies involving translational research combining monoclonal antibodies with cytotoxic and biologic agents in lymphoma, leukemia, and other hematological malignancies. He has published or presented abstracts, book chapters and manuscripts in peer-reviewed journals such as Blood, Journal of Clinical Oncology, Leukemia Research, Leukemia Lymphoma etc. The major focus of his research involves immunotherapy and the development of novel methods of enhancing tumor response to biologic agents.
