CURRENT PROJECT
Theme: Empowering Alternate Workforce in Oncology (Published Education Book ASCO 2017)
Description: We have made tremendous progress in cancer research. The treatment will be its worth only if it reaches all people in need. Due to multiple social ,financial, logistic reasons only very few patients start treatment, continue treatment. As a result we do not achieve our goals of cure, longer survival or better quality of life. To improve this a healthcare delivery model has been designed and effectively implemented in a 7 States (Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, Himachal Pradesh, Rajasthan, Bihar, UP, Gujarat,Chhattisgarg) in India This could be good model for cancer care delivery for countries with less human resources. Model established in 176 districts of India with coverage to 300 million population, presented at ASCO annual meeting in 2017. Dr Susan Miesfeldt MD from Maine Medical Center reported in ASCO Connection on 19 th May 2015 about this programme , as serving these goals
Other Activities
International Oncology activities
Cancer activities with International Cancer Institute , Kenya in various counties of Africa-Ongoing
Reviewing and assisting Cancer care and Sickle cell care in Burundi
- Cancer Camp-Kabul Afghanistan: One of the longest and best attended camp where more than two hundred patients were seen. The lecture at Indira Gandhi Institute of Child Health was well received. The live phone in programme on local TV channel- TOLO was as well a great opportunity to increase awareness about cancer.

Establishing Speciality of Medical Oncology- Cancer Chemotherapy in Central India: Cancer Chemotherapy as an independent branch is lagging behind as other specialist cover up and doctors were not coming to take up this speciality. But this branch forms the mainstay of cancer management. Right from 1981 when I first approach for house job in Tata Hospital I was confident in taking up this speciality as I had received formal orientation during my studies and training in Europe. I was one of the first to take up this branch individually in this country and was one of the very first to take it up outside the setting of cancer hospital. Even today the total number of chemotherapists practicing exclusive this branch does not exceed 50. Through professional and public education it is a well-recognized branch in central India. I had been respected and privileged to be member of National Society and now even its Honorary Secretary.
Cancer Care Trust: The project was conceived by group of doctors and social workers and had taken my major time. Through public educational ideology CCT was able to create a public image and establish one of its kind Cancer Detection and Prevention Center and Cancer Care Hospital. For the first time a concept of well designed cancer detection and prevention center was put in to practice. From no money the project has gone high to eight crore rupees.
PAP Cytology Programme: Encouraged with meeting at ICMR I decided to launch PAP cytology programme with aim to educate doctors and manufacture spatula. Through personal efforts I convinced every lady doctor to take PAP smear and organized for its reporting free. With help of local industrialist made plastic spatula, which later on with support of CCT translated into real spatula, now in use. But I was able to generate the awareness about PAP cytology and the number of these investigations, which was in tens, has gone to thousands per anum. This will lead to early detection of cervical cancer.
Anti -Tobacco -Movement- Tobacco is one of the biggest killers. It causes diseases, which can be prevented. Encouraged with presentations at Budapest and Hamburg Conference, I decided to study and use full campaign strategies. It was this time I read and planned A Total Campaign – campaign which tried to cover every aspect of mass education and planning. The idea was to educate masses and bring together social organizations and people. Within a span of few years a most well designed and planned campaign was given to the town, which has left mark not only in Indore and MP, but whole of the country. Its success was well appreciated nationally and internationally was able to make a dent in National Anti Tobacco Campaign and was even given charge of planning National campaign. I was made member of the executive and helped in bringing closer all groups working on this issue. Organised painting competitions, poster competitions, mass rallies, published stickers, leaflets, music campaigns, and many other activities.
The data had been presented at various meetings and has been recognized as one the most planned campaigns. In one go it had included – hoarding, leaflets, public education stickers, posters, lectures, rallies, painting competitions, slogan competitions. These all activities were planned together. And the impact was phenomenal. Generally organizations hold individual activity. This gave to conclusion that multifarious activity in short span of time creates more impact than individual over long time.
This also helped in creating public image for Cancer Care Trust, which later translated in to huge donations.
Public Education in Cancer: Public education is an important aspect of medicine. My interest had been in cancer education .I had been regularly giving public lectures on aspects of early diagnosis, cancer related checkup guidelines, reducing risk of cancer. Various leaflets have been prepared from time to time related to this.
Tsunami Relief Work: Participated as tsunami relief worker in Little Hutbay Area of Andaman Nicobar Islands in Jan 2005 right after the tsunami struck this area. One of the first person to reach and offer medical and socials relief with NGO- VHAI. Experience published in Niramayam , Batra Hospital and acknowledged by “Outlook”.
