Vera Paulson, MD, PhD
I am a board certified anatomic, pediatric, and molecular pathologist with clinical and research interests in assay development for tumor characterization and therapeutic target discovery. My current research builds on my prior work validating and implementing a DNA based targeted next generation sequencing panel (UW OncoPlex version 6) designed to detect alterations in genes related to cancer treatment, prognosis, and diagnosis. These alterations include single nucleotide variants (SNVs), insertion/deletions (indels), structural variations (SVs), and copy number variants (CNVs); the assay is also validated for evaluation of microsatellite instability (MSI) status and tumor mutational burden (TMB). The clinical application of OncoPlex for the characterization of neoplasms has yielded numerous publications in understudied solid and CNS neoplasms and provided a platform for enrollment of patients in clinical trials. This work has also resulted in collaborations with Seattle Childrens, Phoenix Childrens, and Childrens Oncology Group (COG).
